“Tabby, stop licking that water from the stones outside.”
“No way, it is the best water I have tasted for a long while.”
“But it is not very clean. I have a nice bowl of pure fresh water for you.”
“You mean that water that arrives through the tap? I prefer my natural taste.”
“But the water in our home is pure and healthy.”
“If your taste buds were as well developed as those of a feline you would discover that your “tap” water is full of chemicals which destroy the natural flavours.”
“But those chemicals also destroy the bacteria which is in the water.”
“Mrs. Human you enjoy a glass of wine now and again.”
“Yes, it goes down well with a meal.”
“And often it is the older wines that develop a good taste.”
“Of course.”
“The Water falling from the sky is the purest you can have, mixed with nature’s flavours and has not been cooped up in a bottle for years.”
“That is not the same.”
“Of course it is. We felines have very sensitive taste buds and recognise pure water when it falls. Who needs a bowl for water when nature provides her own receptacles. This stone as been around for many years and the water which has collected on it is full of the flavours of its past. Your water indoors has no flavour.”
“But water does not have to have flavours.”
“That is according to the human facts. Mrs. Human you do not know what you are missing. I can taste cells of long gone creatures in my water. I can see waterfalls teeming with life.”
“Yes Tabby, I am sure. I still prefer my water to be lifeless.”
“Everyone to their own Mrs. Human. My water lives. Try some.”
My cats also love to go outside and drink from puddles. A friend has cats who do the same. In their household they call it “God water”.

As you already know but I will say again you’re very clever Tabby. I wondered why cats prefer rain water puddles now I know. Thank you so much Tabby.

It has been that way for many years. Our feline civilisation was built on rain puddles.
